What the family law market in London actually looks like

There are 1,404 firms practising family and matrimonial law with an office in Greater London. That is the largest concentration of family practices anywhere in England and Wales, and it does not behave like one market. A family solicitor in a four-partner Highgate firm and a family associate at a City practice are doing different work, for different clients, at different prices.

The boutique end dominates. Over 1,102 of those firms have ten solicitors or fewer. That matters for candidates because boutique family practices tend to offer earlier file ownership, direct client contact from day one and a wider spread of work. It also means the salary range is wider than the headline suggests.

A newly qualified family solicitor in London can expect between £35,000 and £52,000 at a boutique or high street firm, depending on the borough and the quality of the client base. At mid-size and regional London firms, NQ salaries sit closer to £42,000 to £55,000. The larger practices and niche family boutiques known for high-net-worth work can push NQ offers above £55,000.

By 4 to 5 PQE, the spread opens. A family solicitor running their own caseload at a London boutique will typically earn between £55,000 and £75,000. At the firms handling complex financial remedy, TOLATA, Schedule 1 and international relocation, 5 PQE can reach £80,000 or more if you are also developing a following.

The question most candidates underestimate is which part of London they want to practise in. Inner London firms tend to pay more but compete for the same talent as the City fringe. Outer London and the commuter edges of Essex, Surrey and Kent can offer a better net position once you factor travel costs and parking. A £50,000 offer in Bromley with a 20-minute commute is worth more than a £55,000 offer in Holborn with a £5,000 annual season ticket and no car parking.

What makes a strong family candidate in London is not just PQE. It is whether you can run a mixed private and publicly funded caseload, whether you have experience with financial remedy and children work, and whether you have any business development track record. Supervision ability matters too. With over 1,102 boutique firms in London, a family lawyer who can manage a junior or a paralegal is worth more than one who cannot.
