The civil litigation landscape in London is enormous, and the salary range reflects it

Greater London has 1,626 firms practising civil litigation. That is the single largest practice area and county combination in England and Wales. The range of work sitting behind that number runs from small claims track debt recovery at a two-partner firm in Croydon to complex commercial disputes at a 200-lawyer City practice. Treating them as one market is where salary conversations go wrong.

At boutique and high street firms, a newly qualified civil litigation solicitor in London earns between £35,000 and £48,000. The lower end is usually general civil work including debt, contract disputes and landlord and tenant. The upper end reflects firms handling more complex multi-track cases, professional negligence, property disputes or insurance litigation.

By 4 to 5 PQE, the spread widens sharply. A litigator at a boutique running their own files can expect £52,000 to £70,000. At mid-size London firms handling commercial disputes, insurance defence or construction litigation, the range moves to £60,000 to £85,000. At the larger City practices, experienced litigators can exceed £90,000, but those roles come with billing targets and business development expectations that not every candidate wants.

The 209 large firms on this list include some of the biggest names in English litigation. But it is worth knowing that over 1,090 of the 1,626 are boutique practices with ten solicitors or fewer. That is where the most accessible opportunities are for candidates moving from outside London or stepping up from a regional firm. Boutique litigation firms in London often offer work that punches above the firm size, because the clients come for the partner, not the brand.

Civil litigation is broad enough that specialism matters more than PQE in most salary conversations. A 3 PQE solicitor with genuine professional negligence or construction experience is worth more than a 5 PQE generalist, and will be paid accordingly. If you are benchmarking your salary, benchmark it against the type of work you do, not just your year of call.

The other factor most candidates forget is London geography. A civil litigation role in the City is not the same market as one in Stratford or Wimbledon. The commute, the billing culture and the client expectations are different. A candidate in South London looking at roles in Croydon, Bromley or Kingston may find a better package than one chasing a higher headline in EC2.
