Trainee Solicitor Careers in the UK
A trainee solicitor is in the final stretch before qualification: rotating through practice areas under supervision, sitting the SQE assessments, and building the case-handling experience that turns into a Newly Qualified position. The package, structure, and route depend on the firm, but the destination is the same.
About the Trainee Solicitor role
Most trainees still join via a structured two-year training contract, with three or four six-month seats covering different practice areas. The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) replaced the LPC route from September 2021; new joiners now need to pass SQE1 and SQE2 plus complete two years of qualifying work experience. Some firms maintain their LPC-route trainees until they qualify; from 2032 onwards everyone qualifies via the SQE.
The training contract structure
- Seat rotations:typically three to four six-month seats. City firms usually offer Corporate, Banking, Litigation, Tax, Real Estate, and Employment options. High street and regional firms offer narrower rotations focused on the firm's core practice areas.
- SQE preparation: firms either pay for an SQE prep course before the contract begins, run preparation alongside the seats, or fold it into the qualifying work experience itself. Magic Circle and US firms front-load the prep; smaller firms tend to integrate it.
- Qualification choice: at the end of the contract, trainees apply to qualify into a specific team. Allocation depends on team headcount, seat performance, and partner sponsorship.
SQE timeline
- SQE1 covers functioning legal knowledge across business law, dispute resolution, contract, tort, property, wills, the criminal system, and more. Two multiple-choice papers.
- SQE2 is the practical skills assessment: client interviews, advocacy, case analysis, legal research, drafting, and writing. Held in person over five days.
- Two years of qualifying work experience can be at up to four employers, signed off by a supervising solicitor. Paralegal and other pre-contract experience can count.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pass the SQE before starting a training contract?
It depends on the firm. Most City firms run a sponsored SQE preparation course before the contract begins. Smaller firms often integrate SQE study with the qualifying work experience over the two-year contract. Either way the trainee should be qualified by the end.
What's the typical NQ retention rate?
Magic Circle and US firms retain around 80 to 95 per cent of their trainees on qualification, dependent on the year. Mid-tier and regional firms vary more widely with retention rates of 60 to 90 per cent. The choice of qualification seat is a critical factor.
How does trainee pay differ between London and the regions?
London Magic Circle and US firms pay £55,000 to £75,000 in Year 1 and £60,000 to £85,000 in Year 2, with US firms at the top end. Regional and High Street firms typically pay £24,000 to £30,000 in Year 1 and £26,000 to £34,000 in Year 2. Use the salary estimator for a more precise figure tied to your firm size.
